Canal Saint Martin

The Canal Saint-Martin is a charming 5km section of a waterway network commissioned by Napoleon in the early 19th century to provide Parisians with clean drinking water. One end of the canal is at the Paris-Arsenal (just south of the Place de la Bastille) and the other is north of there at the Basin de la Villette (Stalingrad or Jaures metro stops).  It connects to the Seine just east of the Ile-Saint-Louis and runs underground for 2kms between the Bastille and République.

The Canauxrama boat company operates 2.5 hour cruises starting from both ends of the canal. The cruise takes you through some beautiful areas of the Paris right bank. Lined with 100 year old trees, the canal itself is spanned by elegant footbridges and contains many locks to transverse with walkways, cafes with outdoor seating, chique boutiques and stunning buildings alongside it. In summer, the banks and cafes next to them are filled with people enjoying the sunshine and watching the boats go by and street artists perform.

The cruise is only around 15 euro which is not too expensive for a relaxing and romantic way to see a different view Paris.
