St Flour stone cottage set in buttress of 15th century church This is the most-photographed house in Saint-Flour located in the centre of France. It lies in the heart of the old town of narrow, cobbled streets and many places and market squares. It was built between the buttresses of the 15th-century church of Saint Vincent (now an art gallery) just after the Revolution, about 1789, for (and probably by) the local carpenter who was employed to look after the church buildings. It goes straight up for 5 floors, with one room on each floor. Saint-Flour (pop. 7000) is in the mountains of the Auvergne, 100 km south of Clermont Ferrand. It is an old ville perchée with part of the ancient city wall intact. In the heart of the old town the streets are cobbled and there are many places where you can shop in the boutiques, sit at a cafe with a coffee or glass of wine ir select local produce from the wonderful Saturday market. There are many small restaurants near the house — from an authentic pizza restaurant to tiny places with superb views overlooking the valley with local specialities. A boulangerie is also nearby. The lower town sits on a peaceful river and there are plenty of wonderful walks around town. The Auvergne is one of the most unspoilt regions of France. It is a stunning area of volcanic vistas, deep river gorges and towns and castles perched on pinnacles. The town of Le Puy is relatively close by.
