Cottage Stay in Bray Sur Seine - Le Grenil, Ile de France

Bray is situated in a hollow in the valley of the Seine where it flows lazily from the department of Champagne. The village itself is just an hours travel time from the centre of Paris and has a lively history dating back to 54 BC. It has been occupied by the Romans, Visigoths , the Burgundians and the Francs to name a few of the early settlers. The recorded history from 915 tells us that it was originally a fortified village with a feudal chateau and belonged to the kings of those times. Jeanne d'Arc rested here on one of her journeys, resulting in the village being an important historic site.

Bray is situated in the east of Ile de France, bordering Burgundy and Champagne. The narrow old streets are lined with half-timbered houses and the prestigious market on Friday morning attracts the local French both from nearby villages and further afield.

Paris can be reached via the A5 in less than an hour, making Bray a perfect place for commuters who enjoy living in quieter surrounds. The village has tout commerce , banks, pharmacies, two superb patisseries, two butchers , a mini market open 7 days a week, cafes and restaurants. Outside the village walls there are two large supermarkets within walking distance of the house.

The country gastronomy in the Seine-et-Marne offers an extensive range of local culinary delights prepared from local farm products. Terrines, pates, rillettes and fresh fois gras, traditionally made bread, smoked duck breast and a wide selection of prepared dishes. Fresh eggs, farm chicken, fowl, cocks, geese, guinea fowl, rabbit and pigeon, salmon, and trout, cheeses and milk products and garden fruit and vegetables are all available. Being so close to Champagne and Burgundy the cuvés of your choice are readily available.

Shopping is under the heading Bray. Also don't forget Paris which is only about 60 minutes from Bray (by car to Fontainebleau then train to Gare de Lyon). The superb covered hall in the square is still used for the busy weekly Friday market. The market attracts many visiting stallholders and spills out into several of the old streets including Rue de l'Eglise outside 'Le Grenil'

Other nearby markets include:
Provins - Saturday
Sens - Monday all day
Pont-sur-Yonne - Wednesday am and Saturday am
