House in quiet hamlet in Charente's 'little Switzerland'

Located in South West France, in the beautiful Charente, bordering the Dordogne and the Haute Vienne, this 18th century house named "Ma Chaumière" is in the small, quiet hamlet of La Madrinie, 5 minutes from the nearest village and 15 minutes from the nearest towns (Montbron, St. Mathieu and La Rochefoucauld). The lovely, old city of Angoulême is 40 minutes away and UK low-cost airlines have daily flights to and from Limoges airport (50 mins).  It is 4.5 hours from Charles de Gaulle Airport.

This is a lovely area, known as Little Switzerland, with lots of lakes for swimming and water sports and many marked woodland walks. The challenging, championship golf course of Golf de la Prèze is only 8 minutes away, with French, British and Dutch members and an exceptional restaurant; everyone is welcome.

This lovely four-bedroom house was built in the early 18th Century and has been meticulously maintained, and has 163 m² of living space, with lounge/dining room (40 m²) with beams and wood-burning insert fire; a fully equipped and fitted kitchen with beams (21m²) with breakfast area; entry hall (8 m²) with stairs to first floor.  

On the ground floor there are two bedrooms, a main bedroom with a queen-sized bed  (16m²) and a bathroom (10m²). The second room (9m2) is suitable for children with a queen-sized sofa bed. On the first floor there are two bedrooms: one bedroom (19m²) with beams and a dressing room, and a second twin bedded bedroom (10m²) with beams and a shower room. All first floor rooms have double-glazed windows and superb views over the Dordogne and Haute Vienne.


An integral barn/garage (25m²) has hot and cold water and is currently used partly as a utility area with washing machine, dishwasher, and partly as a workshop and storage area. The central heating is electric. There is ample gated car parking, which is accessed via the driveway up the right hand side of the house.

In the lounge room there large plasma TV and digibox with English TV channels as well as books and magazines as well as  card and board games too. Outside is a patio area with a table and 8+ chairs and umbrella and a BBQ & petanque/bocce set. The house is set on 1750sq metres of land and there are some great walking tracks and the Tardoire River is within easy walking distance. There are fruit trees and a very large lawned area too.

The bread van delivers croissants & baguettes about lunch time in the week and in the morning on Sunday.  The fish van comes on Wednesday and so does the grocery van. Most villages hold a small market once a week, usually a Friday or Saturday but the biggest is the one at Piegut-Pluviers on Wednesday, which is only a 15 min. drive.  There is an excellent indoor market in Angouleme which is open mornings, including Sunday morning. There is a famous motor race around the ramparts of Angouleme each September.  We are 2 hours from Le Mans racetrack, which has an amazing museum attached, that is very welcoming to Australians.

There is a wonderful Tourist Information Office in Montbron, which has a huge selection of things to do and see in the area and beyond. There are many restaurants within easy driving distance.  There are menus for many of these restaurants in the house.The Brise Bois at Rouzede is more expensive but very nice restaurant.  The Toscane is a fabulous Pizzeria and Restaurant which is in the village square in Montbron. The local restaurant in Roussines has recently closed but Francois, the owner and chef, has gone to Montemboeuf, which is near by, and his new bar/restaurant is very good.  There is a very posh Restaurant at Massignac called the Domaine des Etangs, which is a chateau with a lake and quite beautiful but is more expensive.  An inexpensive Restaurant is also nearby, but still pretty good, is the Camping des Etang, also at Rouzede - it has a nice atmosphere and the bar is very like an English one.  Most villages have a restaurant/bar where you can get a fairly basic but good value lunch.  

Rent is $880AUD a week for 1-2 persons, $1,100 for 3-4 persons, 5-6 for $1,300, for 7-8 persons an additional $100 per person per week.   Charges are inclusive of heating, electricity & laundering of all linen, except during the months from October to May inclusive, there is an extra charge of $150 AUD a week to cover the cost of electricity. DEFINITELY NO PETS ARE ALLOWED

The non-refundable $250AUD deposit will be required at time of booking and can be transferred to another date if notification is given 3 months in advance, If another date is unable to be found then 70% of the deposit will be refunded.
