Two charming gites for rent in Brittany

These charming gîtes in Brittany are well situated for exploring a fascinating and easy to access region of France. These properties have been carefully renovated to retain their original Breton features, whilst incorporating the comfort and facilities you would expect to find in personally maintained self catering holiday accommodation.

La Vieille Longere (sleeps up to 6 guests, or a couple if just the ground floor is booked) and
La Belle Maison (sleeps up to 4 guests) can be booked weekly or for long weekends and midweek breaks.

Located near Plessala, a friendly market village in central Brittany, La Fontaine Rouillee is a tiny hamlet that nestles in rural tranquility. The area is easily accessible from the western channel ports (where ferries from the UK arrive), international airports and TGV stations. Brittany is well known for its spectacular coastline and historic architecture, a truely unique French experience. There are lots of cycling tracks in the area and bikes for hire. Also close to Dinan, St Malo and Rennes.

Comment from former UK now Brittany based owners Penny & Ray McClure: Since we started renting out our gîtes in 2006 we have aimed to provide well equipped and comfortable vacation rental properties that we would enjoy staying in ourselves. We look forward to welcoming you to La Fontaine Rouillee .

La Vieille Longère gîte is a character two storey, three bedroom (all with shower rooms) holiday rental for up to six guests - it is particularly popular with groups of adult friends sharing a break, and older families. Alternatively out of peak season, La Petit Longère is offered at a reduced rate, one bedroom, ground floor option exclusively. Note, not suitable for children under the age of 12.

The rental accommodation in this lovely old stone long-house is entered through a traditional Breton arched doorway which opens into a double height hall that features the original exposed oak beams restored throughout the property.

On the left of the hall there is an open plan, galley kitchen with 5 ring range cooker and lots of equipment for self-catering.  The deep low window seat is a good place to keep an eye on dinner whilst enjoying a drink! Outside the big patio area has a built-in BBQ, outdoor dining furniture for 6 and 2 recliners.  The uninterrupted rural views from here are magnificent all year round. Raised stone planters and fruit bushes edge the terrace; beyond which you can access our open paddock which is dotted with oak and apple trees.

At the rear of the house there is a pretty downstairs double bedroom which also has French doors. There is a shower room adjacent to the bedroom.  This layout provides a good option if you wish to avoid stairs; and means couples can just use the ground floor of the house as a one bedroom apartment.

Rent: $400-1000 depending on number of guests and season

The charming detached holiday cottage, La Belle Maison, was named by a former mayor of Plessala - its picture postcard looks are enhanced by the mature flowering shrubs surrounding the property.
The cottage sleeps up to four guests plus a baby (optional travel cot and highchair available), although it  is frequently chosen by couples seeking a tranquil country retreat. The cottage is approached through its private south-west facing garden, which benefits from the sun throughout the day and on into summer evenings, when wonderful sunsets over the forest can be enjoyed.

The dual aspect kitchen, is a lovely bright and airy room overlooking the garden.  As well as the working area of the kitchen, there is plenty of space for a dining table with four chairs, plus the sideboard for crockery and a tall corner unit to store cleaning equipment out of sight.

There is a separate sitting room which has chestnut parquet flooring with carpet square to make it cosy, and a very comfortable 3 piece suite.  The wood burner has a top-box that is ideal for simmering casseroles, warming plates or mulling wine in cooler months.
Further down the hall, opposite each other there are two equal sized bedrooms, either of which can accommodate a travel cot if needed. On the left is the pretty, west facing double bedroom; the large window has far reaching views to the distance forest.  The twin bedroom benefits from the morning sun from its east facing window.  All the beds are 2 metres long and both rooms have plenty of storage space.

Finally there is a spacious modern shower room which has a large basin set in a vanity unit, shower cubicle, wc, and heated towel radiator.

Rent: $500-900 depending on season
