Nice is the fifth most populated city in France with over 1 million people, not including the 4 million tourists that visit this famous city on the Riviera. Nice is the second largest French city on the Mediterranean coast and in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region after Marseille.

The natural beauty and mild climate of Nice came to the attention of the English upper classes in the second half of the 18th century, when an increasing number of aristocratic families spent winters there. This is where the seaside promenade, the Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English) alongside the Baie des Anges  (Bay of Angels) got its name. The area has also been appealing to painters like Matisse whose work is displayed in many of the city's museums including the Musee Matisse.

Nice is easily access by rail (TGV to/from Paris 6 hours and Marseille 2.5 hours) or car with ongoing easy routes to other European counties notably Italy with the border very close. There is also a major airport.

Key features of Nice include the beach albeit covered with large pebbles, Hotel Negresco, flower markets, pedestrian streets, many squares, the harbour and old town.

Cuisine specialties for Nice include ratatouille, pissaladiere and salade nicoise.
