Conciergerie
Located on the Ile de Cite (island in the middle of the Seine in between the left and right banks), the Conciergerie became famous during the French revolution as it was the place from which over a two year period 2,780 people were sentenced to death by guillotine. The prisoners were detained in this building until they left for the Concorde square where they were beheaded. The most famous of these was Marie Antoinette, the queen of France and sister of the king of Austria. The site today is open to the public and includes a recreation of Marie Antoinette's cell.
