Lyon is the largest city area outside of Paris. It is located in the east of France in the Rhone-Alpes region (not too far from the French Alps), half way between Paris and Marseille. It is on the main TGV route south and also has many international flights landing at its airport.

The city is known for its historical and architectural landmarks and is a world heritage site. It has developed a reputation as the capital of gastronomy in France with its famous bouchon restaurants. Lyon is also known for its famous light festival 'Fete des Lumieres' which occurs on/around 8 December and lasts for four days, earning Lyon the title of Capital of Lights. 

Features of Lyon include is its basilica on top of the hill overlooking the city, the dominant Rhone and Saone rivers running through it and in between an island where the Place Bellecour can be found which is the third largest public square in France and the largest pedestrian only square in Europe. Like Paris, the city is divided into arrondissements and has a metro system.
