Strawberries Romanoff

 Tsar Nicholas I of Russian Romanoff Dynasty

Strawberries Romanoff originates with the great French pastry chef Marie-Antoine Careme (1784-1833), who cooked, and made this dessert, for the Russian Tsar Nicholas I, an early and great member of the Romanoff dynasty. Careme is known as the creator of French haute cuisine and he is the author of one of the first great French cookbooks, the 5-volume L’Art de la Cuisine Française.


  • one punnet  of strawberries
  • 1/2 cup orange Juice
  • 1/4 cup triple sec curacao liqueur (or any orange flavoured liqueur)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract


  • Soak the strawberries in the orange juice and liqueur
  • Place, covered, in the refrigerator for an hour or more.
  • Whip the cream, gradually adding the sugar and vanilla.
  • Spoon the berries into dishes with the cream on top.
