We too now have our own special place in France - by Lil Kelman and Stephen Reed
(Oct 07)

Last November we attended Sharon’s and David’s French property purchasing workshop. Armed with our workbook from the workshop we headed off to France in March this year to spend three months finding a house. The one we bought is in Le Bugue in the Black Perigord region of Dordogne right on the Vezere River - we love it!

The village, with its 3,000 inhabitants, is surrounded by treed hills and has two churches. The house is 300m from centre ville with its excellent restaurants (we found 10 so far!), boulangeries and shops. There are 3 supermarkets and a "wine cave" where the owner knows a lot about Aussie wines as well as the local French varieties - the village is at the edge of the Bordeaux wine area. The village has a fantastic market on Tuesdays and a smaller one on Saturday - Stephanie Alexander in her book "Traveling and Cooking in the South west of France" makes several mentions of it. Only 4 km away is a swimming spot where the Vezere river meets the Dordogne river - if we do not want to go to the local swimming pool. The place next door rents canoes if you are up to the paddle.

The house itself is an 18th century French provincial manor style town house with four bedrooms, dining room, kitchen, lounge, summer kitchen and study. Attached to the house is a lovely terrace overlooking our beautiful garden with views to the bridge and village. The house cost 350,000 euro ($550,000), which was over our original budget but well worth it. While in need of some prettying up and new furniture, it doesn’t need any major renovations which is good. Principal/interest finance was obtained at 4.2% pa for 12 years fixed which with our workbook took only a little effort to secure. Theoretically we settle on 30 October but after Sharon’s and David’s experiences we won’t be too worried if we don’t own it officially until later. Whenever it become ours, we have an excellent local property agency ready to rent it out for 797 -1587 euro a week to mainly Americans at this stage and some Australians (go to reference BUG200).

We would like to thank David and Sharon who gave us the confidence to complete our dream. Their workbook and workshop were invaluable - not only were the French terms useful but the steps you go though assisted a lot. It would have been a confusing process without that preparation, merci beaucoup! Please email us if you want information at

Merci aussi Lil et Stephen - bon chance pour votre maison achat!

PS: After a few more dramas, Lil an Stephen's property did go through - they are very happy.
