Long term furnished rental available in Normandy farmhouse

Exceptional residential opportunity in Calvados, Normandy, for visiting academics, artists and others who want a taste of unspoilt rural France. Live for a month or longer in a unique family owned and furnished simple French farmhouse.

Maison Como is a long, two storey stone farmhouse with shutters, built 200 years ago and situated in Le Bisson, a tiny hamlet in Calvados. The nearest town, Caumont l'Evente (containing the nearest shops), is about 10k away - you will need transport. Slightly further afield lie Bayeux, home of the famous tapestry and a beautiful medieval cathedral, and also the World War Two Normandy landing beaches as well as Rouen and Mont Saint Michel. History permeates Normandy, but the immediate area is not frequented by tourists. Friendly neighbours are mostly farmers, who pursue a rural, traditional way of life little changed for centuries.

Maison Como would suit discriminating people, such as artists and academics, who want a quiet secluded location in which to read, write, paint, think and to soak up the rural French atmosphere and the local history. We would like to be sure that anyone who rents it will accept its unusual character and the family possessions within, (of sentimental rather than material value), and who will respect the house, the surroundings and neighbours.

The ground floor comprises the salon, kitchen/family area, small study and a bathroom with toilet. The kitchen is simple with a fridge, microwave, electric kettle and toaster, and gas bottle cooker. Basic crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are supplied. In the old hayloft upstairs is a large bedroom with double beds at each end. Other guests can be accommodated on folding beds downstairs in the main salon. There is a washing machine, TV, video recorder and a 1960s radiogram that plays records. The furniture is unique and interesting with a dresser from 1930s Berlin, a battered family heirloom 1930s table and sideboard. The house is heated by electric heaters and a modified fireplace which heats both main downstairs rooms.

Rent: $1700 per month April-September inclusive, including electricity (no telephone or linen).
