Normandy 18th century barn for rent

Welcome to this home in France, located within Basse Normandy, in the area of Manche, which is recognised as an area of great natural beauty.

The barn is a 18th Century granite stone farm building that has been recently totally renovated with a high level of French craftsmanship, furnished with stylish, yet comfortable furniture and has modern appliances.  It is set in the countryside, surrounded by grazing & pastureland, in a small commune and is peaceful and quiet yet close to two large towns.

Normandy is famous for its wonderful cider, green pastures, stone houses and delicious cheeses. The history of Normandy is of battles from William the Conqueror to the invasions on the D-Day beaches. The house is ideally located to explore the beauty and history of both Normandy and Brittany including Mont St Michel, the famous French monastery. The house is also close to Calvados...home of the delicious apply brandy and fine ciders. There is the opportunity for walking, golf, horse riding and cycling locally.

  

Location

The barn is located in a small rural hamlet in the commune of St Clement Rancoudray about 300 km west of Paris. There is a wide choice of transport from both UK and Paris as the property is easily accessible. The local airport at Dinard has daily flights from London Stansted. The UK sea ferries sail to Caen, Le Havre and St Malo several times a day, which take cars and foot passengers. The closest rail station is Vire, just 15 km away which has a direct train line to Paris (approx.3 hours on TVG).

The nearest big town with full services is Sourdeval, which is 3 km north.  Although relatively a small town, it is known as the Village of Flowers in summertime and services all needs. Here you can find most things you require, including a patisserie and bread shops, a butcher, several bars, newsagents, post office,  ATM terminals with a Credit Agricole bank, pizza shop, small cafes, and  2 supermarkets and garages.

There is a Farmers Market on Tuesdays in town with a wide variety of produce and local fare and other markets every day of the week in nearby towns. Choice of dining from fine authentic French Cuisine at the Moulin du Auberge (watermill.) through modern eateries in town centres to traditional fare at local restaurants.

Mortain is located south about 3 klm, and has spectacular views over the countryside, including 2 famous waterfalls. (Petite and Grande Cascades)

Avranche is only 45 mins away and has some wonderful historical buildings and great views over the valley and Bay of Mont St Michel. The start of the Cherbourg Peninsula has a wide choice of beaches only a short drive away.

Mont St Michel is a comfortable hours drive and a site not to be missed.

Caen and the Bayeaux Tapestry are 60 mins in a northern direction.

Vire has a great historic monument at it centre and a castle ruin close to the river. There are numerous War memorials, battlefields and fronts in this area to satisfy the Historical tourist. Vire also has many bars, pizzerias and creperies, cinemas and a museum.

Accommodation

The barn is a comfortable, fully furnished, 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom granite stone renovation. Ideally suited to one or two couples for both long and short term rental. Sleeps 2-4 adults in two Queensize beds.

      

On the ground floor there is a large open plan lounge and dining room with a terrific wood burning stove. The barn has underfloor heating throughout both levels, so suitable for both summer or mid-winter stays. There is French and English satellite TV and the house has Wi-Fi.

The kitchen is modern and fully equipped and there is a large refrigerator/freezer, a dishwasher and washing machine, ironing board and iron. The cooktop and oven are electric. All linen and towels are provided. Downstairs also has a separate WC.

 

Upstairs are two bedrooms, both with Queen Size beds. One has an en-suite with shower and the other has an en-suite with an enormous bath and a separate shower, both have heated towel rails. Both rooms have a walk-in dressing room or wardrobe. There is also a small study nook upstairs with a desk for internet or computer use.

A pleasant flower filled garden surrounds the house, with patio areas at the front and back to enjoy morning or evening sunshine with a view of surrounding fields and countryside. Heaps of parking within metres of the barn and a cider apple orchard next door.

Grocery shopping can also be done at the supermarket on the northern outskirts of Mortain, which is easily accessible.  Shops are closed from 12 noon to 2pm (Mon to Sat), although the larger supermarkets are an exception. There is a supermarket in Sourdeval  open on Sunday mornings.

The house is non smoking and no pets allowed. Not suitable for children under 12.

Rates: From $750 per week, depending on the number of people and season.

March, April, May from $850 per week

June, July, Aug, Sept from $900 per week

Oct – Feb   from $750 (excluding Xmas/NY).

Reduced rates overall apply for long stays (3 or more weeks) please contact for details.

A non-refundable initial deposit of 20% is required on booking. Balance of payment to be made within 6 weeks of stay. There is a $200 security deposit also payable on booking which is fully refunded providing no damage has occurred and the barn is left in good order.  A weekly cleaning charge applies for stays over 1 week. No refunds given to cancellations less than 2 weeks from booked dates. Departure cleaning fee of $120 charged if not left in clean and tidy condition. Heating supplement for stays October to April.
