Maison de Poitiers boutique chambre d'hoteMaison de Poitiers is situated on the corner of a medieval square in the 12th century Bastide village of Castillonnes, in the Lot et Garonne. The Lot et Garonne area is famous for its food, wine, history and its unspoilt beautiful countryside. The building started life as a hotel for horse traders in the late 18th centry and in 1961 the building was featured in the French movie "Tout L'or Du Monde" (All the gold in the world) staring Rene Clair and Bourvil. In 2006 the property was purchased by its present owners with the intention of opening a boutique Chambre D’hote. Following an extensive facelift Maison de Poitiers finally opened its doors to the public in late 2007. It is named after Alphonse de Poitiers who founded Castillonnes in 1259. Alphonse de Poitiers was King Louis IX’s brother and carried the title "Count of Toulouse", he built some 40 Bastides, mainly to ward off the English.
There is a central market place where the weekly market takes place on a Tuesday morning and has taken place every Tuesday since 1259. The market is lively and is well worth a visit. Castillonnes also boasts lakes for fishing and swimming, a swimming pool, 3 tennis courts, cinema, petanque and horse racing. There are also local events such as vide-greniers, brocante and such like held through out the year. Castillonnes is an ideal base for visiting local attractions in the area including local historic sites/villages, vineyards and the wine museum at Bergerac as well as plenty of outdoor activities. Maison de Poitiers also offers guests a range of in-house activities including regional cookery lessons, personalised sightseeing tours and hosted private parties.
