La Rochelle This seaside port town on the Atlantic Coast has maintained a lot of its historic architecture including two medieval towers at its harbour entrance and is linked to the beach resorts of Ile de Re by a 2.9km bridge. It is the third most visited city in France. La Rochelle's quais are lined with cafes and bars overlooking attractive boat harbours. It was a fisherman village founded in the 10th century which became an important port from the 12th century onwards.
