Ile de ReThe Ile de Re island of the west coast from La Rochelle has 10 villages on the island. The largest (with 4,000 inhabitants) is St Martin de Re situated in the centre of the island. It is a charming harbour with terraced cafes and is surrounded by remnants of medieval ramparts. The island is a popular tourist destination as it has approximately the same number of hours of sunshine as the famous southern coast of France and is surrounded by sandy beaches. It is also easily accessed by a 2.9km bridge from La Rochelle on the mainland (it has a toll though unfortunately but it is worth it when you get there). It is 18 miles long/3.5 miles wide and was originally four islands - Saint Martin, Loix, Ars and Les Portes which were separated by narrow channels that gradually closed up.
