Pont Du GardThe Pont du Gard is one of the best preserved Roman aqueducts in the world. As such, it attracts huge numbers of tourists, especially in summer. Down from the bridge is a large, stony beach for swimming (but you aren't allowed to swim under the bridge itself due to currents) that’s quite popular in summer. You can also rent canoes nearby. Le Pont du Gard was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. It was originally part of a 50km canal supplying fresh water to the Roman city of Nimes. There is a museum and restaurant nearby. The bridge is located in between Nimes, Arles, Orange and Avignon. |
