Mont Ventoux This is the largest mountain is the Vaucluse region and has been nicknamed the Giant of Provence. It overlooks the valley of the Rhone that it dominates and can be seen from many miles away on a clear day. The view from the top is correspondingly superb. As the name suggests (venteux is French for windy), it can get quite windy at the summit, especially with the Provencal mistral wind. Mont Ventoux is a regular leg and one of the most gruelling climbs in the Tour de France cycling race and there is also a skiing facility on its northern side at Mont Serein with the mountain snow capped from December to April. There are a number of other activities the mountain features such as walking, nature circuit and rock climbing. There are a number of nice villages located on and around Mont Ventoux such as Le Barroux, Malaucene and Sault. Our Provence apartment is located only one hour from Mont Ventoux.
