Marseille
Marseille is the second largest city in France, after Paris, with a population of almost a million. Located on the southeast coast of France, Marseille is France's largest city on the Mediterranean coast and largest commercial port. Marseille is the capital of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The main tourist area is around the old port. The harbour area is abuzz in the mornings with fisherman selling their catches and for lunch and dinner the seafood restaurants come alive, just about all selling Marseille's famous dish: bouillabaisse. The boats in the port are surrounded by great old buildings with an ancient fort at the harbour entry and a church on the hill behind it - from that church you get the best view of the white stone Marseille old town. You can take the little tourist train which takes you around the streets as well as up to the church on top of the hill for a view:
Just around the corner from the old port area is the beach while a little rocky it is close to town. You can get a boat from the old port to the islands in the Bay of Marseille. Most notable is the prison on the Château d'If which was the setting for The Count of Monte Cristo novel.
