Avignon Avignon is the capital of Vaucluse which is the most picturesque region in Provence. The city provides a good base from which to do day trips to the region. It is a walled city with many interesting museums and bridges across the Rhone River. The most famous of these bridges, mentioned in a french children's nursery rhyme, doesn't actually go across the river. The bridge is known as the Pont d' Avignon but it is actually called the Pont Saint Benezet named after the builder who built the bridge in the 11th century after being told to do this by God in several visions. Over the next five centuries it was rebuilt several times before half of it was washed away in the mid-1600’s. The main part of town within the ramparts contains the Place de l'Horloge which leads up to the Place due Palais in front of the Palais des Paper (popes).
