Aix-en-Provence
Aix is a well known city of art and light. It is situated 30 km north of Marseille. It is famous for its preserved architecture and monuments.
The center of Aix is the old town which contains many squares. At the start of the heart of centre ville is the cours Mirabeau, a beautiful tree-lined avenue, with one very wide footpath lined with terrace cafes and the other shops/businesses in old buildings.
The old town with its cobblestoned walking streets is filled with many up market shops, museums, and historical sites. Most notable are the hundreds of fountains throughout the town with a few notable ones on the cours including the great fountain at the La Rotonde [top left photo]. As you walk around town you can't help notice the gold C's for artist Paul Cezanne on the footpaths - he was born, raised, worked and died in Aix-en-Provence. |
