Languedoc-Roussillon is as charming as Provence without the tourists

The Languedoc-Roussillon is a relatively undiscovered region with a beautiful coastline, a rich medieval history and plenty of chateaux and cathedrals. It has borders with Provence, the Mediterranean and the Pyreneees mountains. The lower the number of tourists than Provence, correlates with the comparatively lower the property prices especially inland from the coast. The region has mountains in the north, plains near the sea and historic cities and towns throughout.

The Languedoc-Roussillon may be one of the least densely populated regions of France, but it has several large and mid-sized cities that are unique, fascinating and beautiful. Montpellier has a university dating back to the Middle Ages, Nimes has a rich Roman heritage (the three level Pont du Gard aqueduct is 20km north), Perpigan with its Catalan uniqueness is situated a few minutes from Spain and Beziers has a bridge which carries the Canal du Midi across its river. This famous world heritage listed canal traverses through the region with many other notable towns on it including Agde (a pretty medieval port ten minutes from the Cap d’Agde beach and nudist resort), Sete (a seaside port on the Mediterranean), Narabonne (with cathedral, shops and markets) and Carcassonne (where the entire miniature medieval city is a fairytale fortress castle).

The region is known for its good cuisine and France's most up and coming wines are from it - the vineyards of the Languedoc-Roussillon cover three times the area of the Bordeaux wine district.

There is good access to the region via TGV to Montpellier and/or Beziers as well as various airports.
