Corsica Corsica is officially one of France's regions. It is an island in the Mediterranean Sea located south of the Cote d' Azur and west of Italy which Corsica is actally closest to. Corsican culture has both French and Italian elements as ownership has changed hands many times. It was briefly an independent republic before being incorporated into France in 1769. Napoléon Bonaparte was from Corisca. This “mountain in the sea” has 120 peaks above 2000m, which remain snow-capped until the spring and a national park covers two-thirds of its surface area.
