Canal du Midi The Canal du Midi is 360 km network of navigatable waterways linking the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Along its path there are more than 100 locks and over 200 other structures such as aqueducts, bridges, tunnels. Built in the 17th century, it paved the way for the Industrial Revolution. The canal runs from Sete along the Mediteranian the inland to Toulouse where it joins another canal connecting it to Bordeaux and the Atlantic. The canal also joins onto another waterway which takes you through the Camargue to Nimes/Arles in Provence. Originally built for trade, the canal now during summer is filled with canal boats which can be hired. Along its path, the canal passes through many villages including Agde, Beziers (famous for its bullfights and flower market), Narbonne (with cathedral, shops and markets), Paraza (a bluff top village) and Carcassonne (a fairytale medieval city with its magnificent fortress castle). Villages to the east around the Camargue includine Beaucaire and Aigues Mortes. For more information visit: www.midicanal.fr Return to places to see south |
