Montmartre

During the 19th century, Montmartre's bohemian lifestyle attracted many artists and writers. The Moulin Rouge, situated on the border of the Pigalle sex district, with its near naked cabaret show also added to the notoriety of Montmartre at the time. The area today still has much of the same feel with artists painting the views over Paris from the Butte (hill) Montmartre and Sacre Coeur basilica as well as the nearby Place de Tertre with its artists displays in a square surrounded by cafes facing onto it.

When walking through the narrow, steep and bending cobblestone streets you will find the house where Picasso once lived with other struggling artists at number 13 Place Emile Goudeau and evan a small vineyard on the northern side of the hill (a wine harvest festival is held in October around here each year). Leading up from the Anvers metro station is a string of somewhat dingy but good value clothing, material and souveniers shops worth stopping at on the trek up to the Sacre Coeur. While the area is not necessarily dangerous especially during the day, you still need to watch out for beggars and theives targeting tourists.
