Latin QuarterThe Quartier Latin on the Left Bank is a haven for university students with a bohemian feel. It is so named because students and teachers used to converse in Latin prior to the French Revolution. The area also has some of Paris oldest relics such as the Gallo-Roman baths. The Sorbonne located in the middle of quarter is special as it is France's oldest university. It houses today the Arts and Human Sciences faculties of the University of Paris. Language courses are designed specifically for teaching French to foreign students. There are many streets of interest in this area notably the shoplined Boulevard Saint Michel and bustling Boulevard Saint Germain. The area has many bookshops and popular cafes such as the famous Cafe de Flore and Deux Magots. The
Jardin du Luxembourg
is also located to the south of the quarter. It contains a palace and huge fountain/pond as well as expansive formal gardens which contain a miriad of activities including tennis, basketball and volleyball courts; chess and card games held in the afternoons; tai chie classes; a large children's playground; puppet theatre; behives and a fruit orchard.
