Eiffel TowerThe Eiffel Tower, named after its creater, Gustave Eiffel. The 320 metre high structure was built for the 1889 World Fair and spared from being torn down 20 years later by its practical use as a transmitting antenna. The Champ de Mars to the south and Jardin du Trocadero across the Seine set the Tower off well. All of the tower's pillars have lifts, three of which are open to the public (the fourth in the south pillar takes guests to the Jules Verne restaurant) to take you to one of three levels. The cheapest way to get a view is to walk up the stairs on the south pillar to the first level. For the millennium, a glittering light display was put on for 10 minutes every hour on the hour. It was so popular that it was kept for six further months into 2001 and reinstated in 2003. On Bastile Day each year, the tower is lit up by a fireworks display.
