AuxerreThe capital of northwest Burgundy, Auxerre resounds with history being one of the oldest cities in France. The 15th century tower is surrounded by Renaissance houses. There are two significant churches in town and one has some of the oldest frescoes in all of France dating back to 850 AD. It is a pretty old town with narrow lanes and unexpected open squares. Sitting on a hill, Auxerre looks its best from Pont Paul-Bert and the riverside quais, where houseboats and barges moor. |
