Le Puy (-en-Velay)Located 523km south of Paris and 130km south east of Clermont-Ferrand, Le Puy-en-Velay (usually shortened to Le Puy) is one of the most extraordinary sights in France. Religious statues and structures have been built on top of steep volcanic outcrops (puy means plug in french) that rise from the plain below. The two most famous structures are the 10th century chapel and Virgin Mary (Notre-Dame-de France) statue. Le Puy is a city with steep cobblestone streets with lots of character buildings which are starting to be restored. Return to places to see centre |
