Pears poached in red wine

Ingredients:

  • 6 medium sized firm pears
  • 2 cups red wine
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • cinnamon stick and nutmeg

Instructions:

  • Mix the red wine, lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon stick and nutmeg in a large deep pan.
  • Place on medium heat and bring to a very low boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  • Peel pears, leave the stem on and cut a thin slice off the bottom so pears can later stand upright.
  • Lie pears sideways in the simmering wine sauce and cook for 10-15 min each sdie until tender.
  • Remove pears and reduce sauce by boiling it for about 5-10 minutes until thick and like syrup.
  • Place the pears to serve and spoon sauce on top.
