French Toast - pain perdu (lost bread) 
Ingredients:
- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup castor sugar
- 2 eggs
- 3 1/2 oz. butter
- 12 slices French bread (best if day old)
- 1/2 banilla bean or 1/2 teas extract
Instructions:
- Warm milk, 3/4 cup sugar and vanilla then bring to a boil, remove from heat and cool
- Cut bread into fairly thick slices
- Whisk eggs with the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar
- Heat butter in a large saucepan
- Dip each slice of bread into the milk then the eggs
- Cook on each side until browned
- Top or serve with sugar and cinnamon, berries or maple syrup.
Tip: If you want the whole process to go even faster, or if you are cooking for many people, you can also bake the French toast. Heat oven to 450°F and cook for 6 minutes on each side. |
