Paris (Faubourg) 36 nostalgically looks at Paris in the 1930s

This reasonably enjoyable film is set in the depression in 1936, just before WW2, in a working-class district in the north of Paris known as the Faubourg. Three of Faubourg’s residents attempt to reopen the local music hall, the Chansonia, after it was closed down by a gangster businessman in league with local fascists and the police. This musical seeks to create the tone of French popular films of the 1930s and shows Paris during hard times. We luckily saw a very special preview during the French film festival where the star actor, Gerard Jugnot, was present at the screening. He spoke quite passionately about the movie and his role in it. Paris 36 is beautifully put together and, while it dragged a little at times, captures all the romance, drama, music, style and emotion you could possibly put into one film. Showing in May
