Opportunity to be part owner of a classic Catalan village house

The group

Easygoing, friendly group of 6 couples from Melbourne Australia who love travel, good food and wine and of course “la belle France” seeks another to join their group.

Ten years ago the group got together, bought this house with a great staircase, situated in the heart of the rural Catalan village of Claira. They did it up so it is comfortable and well appointed and offers the welcoming experience of being a home away from home. Their requirements were that it:
* comfortably house a group of friends or 2 families.
* was close to transport, motorways and airports-Perpignan and Barcelona.
* was close to beaches and mountains.
* be within easy reach of markets, gourmet restaurants and the many tourist spots of France and Spain.

Over time membership has changed, 2 couples have moved on and now they are seeking another person/couple to join their group. They see new members as a welcome addition, bringing fresh ideas and energy as well as the opportunity to form friendships.

The house

The classic three level Catalan village house, situated in the heart of the village of Claira in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France, has classic features and is sympathetically renovated. It is one of the oldest houses in the village with classic features and modern amenities.

Located on Claira's place du Marché, t he house is ideally set up for a family or two to three couples as it offers two quite separate sleeping and bathroom areas but with plenty of shared space to get together over drinks or meals and compare experiences in the region. The bakery next door provides classic fresh croissants daily.

Enter from place du Marché into a delightful dining/sitting room with o riginal vaulted ceilings and tr aditional Catalan stonework. This spacious room is ideal for entertaining, or for sitting quietly with a book, and maybe a glass of wine.

Pass under the stairs to find a fully equipped kitchen with electric oven, cook-top, microwave and dishwasher as well as a meals area for breakfast and informal dining. The kitchen area provides entry to a small private courtyard and to the laundry.

Take the gracious old wooden staircase to the next level where you will find the master bedroom overlooking the Place du Marché with a king size bed, another double bedroom and a bathroom with a separate toilet. On level 3 and you will find a well lit and spacious living area with a large-screen television, the third double bedroom and another bathroom.

The house has a rental website and is rented at $1050 a week.

The village and region

The village of Claira is situated between Perpignan and the Mediterannean coast with a population of around 2500. The village church dates from the 14th Century. The square Catalan style tower houses the oldest operating church bells in France (or so it is claimed!) Just by the Tabac is the mural of the smithy. There are a number of local cafes and restaurants (plus some rugby themed bars), a mini-supermarket, and major supermarket and restaurants just a few minutes away by car. There are bike paths inside and skirting the village.

The village of Claira is located in the Roussillon region of southern France, on the coastal plain between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean beaches. Mont Canigou dominates the coastal skyline and is snow-capped for more than half the year.

Claira is an excellent base for a wide range of activities and sightseeing in the region. Whatever your preference there will be something for you in the area including Cathar abbeys and castles, mountain walks, beaches (10km away) and notable places to visit like the charming habour town of Collioure and the major city of Perpignan 15-20 min away.

Price: $38,000 for a part share
