Pouzauges house/village detailsLocated in a region of southwest France having the most recorded sunny days outside the Mediterranean, the village of Pouzauges sits on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. Our house is in centre ville, just across from the church and around the corner from the cobble stoned main square as well as the best boulangerie and pizzeria/creperie in town.
Pouzauges, with its 5,000 inhabitants, lets you settle back into regional village life. In summer the lake comes alive with an outdoor restaurant and water activities. There is a modern cinema with newly released movies and live theatre (in French), biweekly produce markets in the town hall and main square, an indoor aquatic centre with waterslide, art gallery and a selection of restaurants. The village is also steeped in history with many sites to see including two 12th century churches (fresco inside one above left) and castle/rampart ruins on top of the hill (above right) – history/walking tours are available to take in these sites. Pouzauges has also achieved the rating of a three (out of four) flower village for its beauty, green surrounds and charm.
Besides the village itself, you can visit places easily from it including Le Puy du Fou (a medieval theme park and one of the top 10 tourist attractions in France only 10 minutes drive away), Atlantic coastal resort towns (an hour away) of La Rochelle, Ile de Re and Les Sables d’Olonne, the castles of the Loire Valley and cities of Bordeaux and Nantes (both with surrounding wine regions) as well as plenty of local Vendeen villages. Another great feature is that everyone is very friendly - people from the Vendee region are well known as the friendliest in France.
The house has two livable stories. The ground floor has a French colour themed kitchenette, living area and shower/toilet. The second floor has one extra large bedroom with a double bed and day bed (and an additional matress) in the room alongside a separate room with a toilet/washbasin. The house can sleep four adults with a sofa converting into a double bed but can sleep another two children/adults if needed in the day bed/extra mattress (port-a-cot also available). Sitting on the outdoor terrace, you can overlook the church and enjoy some wine/cheese. Just outside the house is free street parking. All linen/utilities (including a washing machine and gas heating) are supplied and there is a TV/CD/DVD player with DVDs available as well as books and games (scrabble, cards, boules).
Rent is $475 a week plus a $50 cleaning fee and $250 security deposit (please note that inside our house is non-smoking). A $150 non-refundable deposit is required to secure a booking. See photo galleries of our house, village and region - also read more about the Vendee area/villages. To see where Pouzauges is in France go to www.mappy.fr – it is four hours drive from Paris (or one hours drive from Nantes TGV or half an hour from the La Roche sur Yonne TGV) and also accessible by train/bus. You can also visit the following French sites to get a feel for the village: www.pouzauges.com, www.pouzauges.net www.paysdepouzauges.fr. We have a local property manager who can arrange to pick you up from the TGV stations for a fee and also provide personalised tours of the region as well.
