Facts about the Cannes Film Festival
- The Festival International du Film was supposed to begin in Cannes in 1939, but due to the war, the launch date was put off. Finally, on 20 September 1946 the Festival de Cannes opened its doors, the first great international cultural event of the post-war period.
- Cannes is one of the world's oldest and most prestigious film festivals. The festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, in the resort town of Cannes, in the south of France on the Cote d'Azur.

Additionally, given massive media exposure, the festival is attended by many movie stars and is a popular venue for film producers to launch their new films and attempt to sell their works to the distributors who come from all over the globe.
- The most prestigious award given out at Cannes is the Palme d'Or ("Golden Palm") for the best film.
