The Flaneur Book This book has been around for about ten years and is still as relevant today as the references it makes to many 19th and 20th century authors and poets. As described by the writer, Edmund White, la flaneur is an aimless stroller who loses him/herself in the crowd, has no destination and goes wherever curiosity directs his/her steps. Edmund lived in Paris for 16 years and spend much of that time wandering through virtually every part of the city, through many backstreets, along the quais and on unknown avenues. He shares these experiences in the style of an eccentric poet/professor which is not surprising as he now lives in New York and teaches writing at Princeton. You will know some of the places but many not - he provides a lot of history about each place he wandered to especially the dramatic and sometimes sordid details about who once lived there or what happened in/around the spot. White says virtually every district in Paris is beautiful, alluring and full of unsuspected delights, especially those that fan out around the Seine in the 1st which is the arrondissement our apartment is in. To be a flaneur in Paris and stroll through famous places like the Palais Royal gardens or discover unique treasures of your own, why not use our charming and historic apartment as your walking base www.frenchdesire.com.au/french-property-rental/paris44 |
